Advantages of MRI

  • Far superior to other imaging tools in providing non invasive imaging with high resolution.

  • Does not use ionizing radiation.

  • A non invasive way to provide information about blood circulation.

  • Shows both 3 dimensional and cross sectional images of the body without repositioning the patient.

  • To date, there has been no long term adverse biological effects associated with extended exposure to the magnetic fields used in MRI imaging.

Disadvantages of MRI

  • Expensive. Machines with high resolution coils, and special  software can reach up to 3 million dollars.

  • Closed space can cause claustrophobia.

  • High acoustic noise.

  • Strong magnetic field will attract ferrous metal objects causing projectile and rotation.

  • Can cause cardiac pacemakers, cochlear implants and defibrillators to malfunction.

  • Long image acquisition time

Simple steps of image acquisition

  • The patient is placed in a magnet

  • A radio wave is sent in

  • The radio wave is turned off

  • The patient emits a signal, which is received and used for

  • Reconstruction of the picture
