what is mitosis?
splitting of cells (grotwth)
copying cell’s DNA and dividing it between 2 dauther nuclei
trisomy
extra chromosome (ex. down syndrome)
sister chromatids vs. homologous chromosomes
sister chromatids: identical/duplicated sets of chromosomes
homologous chromosomes: similar pairs of chromosomes from different parents
sequence of events in the cell cycle
G0: everyday functions
interphase: G1, S, G2
mitosis: PMAT
what happens in G1, S, and G2?
G1: RNA and proteins necessary for DNA replication are created
S: DNA is duplicated
G2: the cell grows to double its size
what happens in PMAT?
prophase: nuclear envelop breaks down and chromatin condenses
prometaphase: mitotic spindle assembles
metaphase: sister chromosomes meet at the middle
anaphase: chromosomes move to poles and mitotic spindle begins to dissassemble
telophase: chromosomes unfold into chromatin and nuclear envelop reassembles
