what is mitosis?

• splitting of cells (grotwth)

• copying cell’s DNA and dividing it between 2 dauther nuclei

sister chromatids vs. homologous chromosomes

• sister chromatids: identical/duplicated sets of chromosomes

• homologous chromosomes: similar pairs of chromosomes from different parents

sequence of events in the cell cycle

1. G0: everyday functions

2. interphase: G1, S, G2

3. mitosis: PMAT

what happens in G1, S, and G2?

G1: RNA and proteins necessary for DNA replication are created

S: DNA is duplicated

G2: the cell grows to double its size

what happens in PMAT?

• prophase: nuclear envelop breaks down and chromatin condenses

  • prometaphase: mitotic spindle assembles

• metaphase: sister chromosomes meet at the middle

• anaphase: chromosomes move to poles and mitotic spindle begins to dissassemble

• telophase: chromosomes unfold into chromatin and nuclear envelop reassembles
