What is binomial nomenclature?
method of naming organisms by using a two part name ( scientific name)
What language are scientific names written in?
Latin
How do we write scientific names?
In italics, Genus first letter capitalized and species lower case
What do cladistics and phylogenetics use to group organisms with their ancestors?
DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) derived characteristics
What are the three domains?
Archaea, Eubacteria, Eukarya
What are the characteristics of Archaebacteria?
Simple cell, unicellular, autotroph, found in extreme environments, prokaryotes ( cells walls don't contain peptidoglycan)
What are the characteristics of Eubacteria (true bacteria)?
Complex cells, unicellular, prokaryotes (cell walls made up of peptidoglycan)
What kingdoms are found in the domain Eukarya ?
Protist, Fungi, Plants, Animals
What is one of the defining characteristics of domain Eukarya?
Eukaryotes(cells have a nucleus)
Which domain have only unicellular organisms?
Archaea, Eubacteria
What are the characteristics of Protists?
Complex cells, most are unicellular, hetero or autotrophic,Examples: slime molds, and algae
What are the characteristics of Fungi ?
Most are unicellular, complex cells, heterotrophic
What are the characteristics of plants?
Multicellular, complex cells, autotrophic
What are the characteristics of animals?
Largest Kingdom, complex cells, multicellular, heterotrophic
Compare Eukaryotes to Prokaryotes
