Code One

An emergency call yelled out immediately to get the instructor's attention if a student or lab partner is hurt.

Acid Dilution Technique

The proper method of diluting strong acids by always adding acid to water, swirling or stirring the solution, and exercising caution with the heat produced, particularly with sulfuric acid.

Fume Hood

A ventilated lab enclosure used when working with volatile substances or poisonous vapors, inside which students must never place their head.

Chemical Flush Requirement

The safety protocol requiring skin or eyes splashed with chemicals to be flushed with running water from an eyewash station or safety shower for at least $20\,\text{minutes}$.

Pipet Bulb or Pump

Rubber or mechanical devices used to fill a pipet; mouth suction must never be used.

Glass Tubing Transport

The procedure of carrying glass tubing, especially long pieces, in a vertical position to minimize breakage and injury.

Glassware Lubrication

The application of lubricant to glassware (tubing, thistle tubes, thermometers) along with using towels or cotton gloves to protect hands before insertion into or removal from rubber stoppers.

Frozen Glassware

Glassware that becomes stuck or frozen in a rubber stopper, which must be taken to the instructor for removal.

Wash Bottles

Containers filled only with distilled water and used strictly for intended tasks like rinsing glassware/equipment or adding water.

Broken Glass Disposal

The cleanup process requiring a brush and dustpan (never bare hands) to sweep up broken glass and place it in a designated glass disposal container.

Thermal Visual Equivalence of Glass

The characteristic that hot and cold glass look visually identical, requiring the user to bring the back of their hand close to glass prior to grasping it to check if it is hot.

Insulating Pad

A heat-resistant pad placed under hot apparatus to prevent placing hot equipment directly on the laboratory desk.

Laboratory Dress Code

Required lab attire consisting of tied-back long hair, secured dangling jewelry/loose clothing, shoes completely covering the foot (no sandals), and mandatory lab aprons and goggles.

Flammable Liquid Handling

Handling flammable hazardous liquids over a pan to contain spills, and never dispensing them near an open flame or heat source.

Fire Drill Shutdown Protocol

Emergency procedure during a fire drill requiring containers to be closed, and gas valves, fume hoods, and electrical equipment to be turned off.

Mercury Thermometer Safety

Safety rule prohibiting touching mercury from broken thermometers and requiring immediate notification of the instructor.

Sharp Instrument Safety

Rules requiring knives and sharp tools to be carried pointing down and away, cut away from the body, grasped only by handles, and never caught while falling.

Electrical Plug Removal Safety

The rule specifying that electrical plugs must be disconnected by grasping the plug (not the cord) with completely dry hands.
