Isms
Forms of discrimination or prejudice (e.g., racism, sexism, classism) targeting people based on identity; they maintain power imbalances and inequality.
Discrimination
The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people.
Prejudice
A preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.
Marginalized
A group pushed to the edges of society and treated unfairly because of identity factors, leading to less power and opportunities.
Genderism
Discrimination based on gender identity or expression.
Sexism
Discrimination based on sex, typically against women.
Racism
Prejudice and/or discrimination based on race.
Colorism
Prejudice and/or discrimination based on skin tone or complexion; favoring lighter skin.
Ethnocentrism
Prejudice and/or discrimination against people based on their ethnic group or culture; belief that one’s own culture is superior.
Heteronormativism
Prejudice and/or discrimination that promotes heterosexuality as the normal or preferred sexual orientation.
Classism
Prejudice and/or discrimination based on economic class.
Ableism
Prejudice and/or discrimination against those who are differently-abled, physically or mentally.
Ageism
Prejudice and/or discrimination against those who are younger or older within a space.
