Physical Fitness
A general state of health and well-being marked by the ability to perform sports and daily tasks without undue fatigue; achieved through proper nutrition and an active lifestyle.
Importance of Physical Fitness
Promotes proper bone and muscle growth, illness and accident avoidance, better posture and appearance, stress reduction, healthy body weight, heart-disease prevention, a youthful feeling, and personal enjoyment.
Physical Fitness Testing
A set of assessments that measure the body’s capacity to do physical work—cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and muscular endurance—using activities like RM lifts, exhaustion sets, and step or walking tests.
Importance of Physical Fitness Test
Helps monitor aerobic capacity, strength, and flexibility, enabling individuals (especially students) to set and track health-related fitness goals.
Health-Related Fitness Components
Core elements tied to overall health: cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.
Cardio-Respiratory Endurance
The heart and lungs’ ability to supply oxygen during prolonged physical activity.
Muscular Strength
The capacity of a muscle group to contract against resistance.
Muscular Endurance
The ability of selected muscles to perform repeated movements over an extended period.
Flexibility
The range of motion available at a joint.
Body Composition
The proportion of lean mass to fat mass within the body.
Skill-Related Fitness Components
Performance-oriented traits: balance, coordination, agility, speed, power, and reaction time.
Balance
The ability to maintain body stability, often aided by vision.
Coordination
The integration of sensory input with muscular actions for smooth movement.
Agility
The skill of changing body direction rapidly and accurately.
Speed
The ability to move the body from one point to another in the shortest possible time.
Power
The explosive application of strength to produce force quickly.
Reaction Time
The interval between stimulus presentation and the initiation of movement.
