• Tigray rebels also demanded grain to feed their fighters

Famine

• child malnutrition rates as high as 47% in parts of Oromia

• thousands died from hunger = untreated diseases

• UN wanted to declare famine in Tigray

• 400,000 people were living in ‘famine like’ conditions according to UN (US says 900,000)

• Across Ethiopia 1 in 6 of the 120 million population need food aid - just 14% of people targeted by NGOs had received any by 21st Jan (after aid resumed)

• starvation deaths at least 350 in Tigray

• ‘starvation and death inevitable’ if aid not recieved
