Value
Range of light and dark. An element of design/art concerned with the degree of lightness of colors.
Shading
Using lighter and darker values to make something look 3-d.
Chiaroscuro
Technical term for shading. Italian for ‘Light –Dark”. The use of value contrast to represent the effects of light and shadow.
Form
An element of design that appears 3-d and enclosed volume such as a cube, sphere, pyramid or cylinder. A form has three dimensions length, width and depth.
Texture
The surface Quality of an artwork usually perceived through the sense of touch. However, texture can also be implied, perceived visually not felt through touch.
Simulated Texture
Texture in an artwork that can be seen but not touched, as distinguished from the actual texture of the work itself.
Proportion
A design principle reflecting the size relationships of parts to one another and to a whole.
H Pencil
Hard light lead. The higher the number the lighter the pencil.
B Pencil
Soft dark lead. The higher the number the darker the pencil.
Ebony
Jet black pencil, the darkest graphite pencil.
