The F has initial success, but Ger counterattack 20th of Aug, Fre hope was crushed by the 24th of Aug

Battle of the Marne
Fra counter offensive to the frontiers, French sixth army attacked the Ger right flank.
Then the fifth army attacked the gap that was made
9th of Sep Ger retreated.
Race to the sea
Ger tried to encircle the French in the north whilst the Fre and GB tried to do the same. The attacks and counterattacks stretched 700km from the alps to the english channel
The July crisis
Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife got shot on the 28th of June 1914. Austria gave Serbia an ultimatum as the result of the assassination, and Germany was Austrias ally.
Russia mobilised and with that Germany felt threatened, having them start the Schlieffen plan
The battle of Verdun
21st February-December 1916
Ger attempt to break the stalemate, focusing on the French army. The attack was aimed to "bleed the French white" Eight divisions were deployed over 13km
Ger had trouble moving their heavy artillery and land switched sides very quickly
About 350 000 casualties for either side
The battle of the Somme
July-November 1916
Attack a long the Somme river, lots of planning had to come in to play
The initial GB/Fra plan was to quickly destroy the Ger, but failed. The furthest advance was 12km by GB
GB lost 420 000, Fra 194 000, Ger 500 000
Passchendaele
July-November 1917
GB attack Ger, only difference from Somme was intensity, this was much more intense
Tank was new addition
Progress was short-lived Ger counter attacked
Stalemate within a stalemate
Allied lost 270 000 and Ger 200 000
