Burnout
Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions: inefficacy, exhaustion, cynicism,
Feelings of inefficacy
Losing value for yourself
Feelings of Exhaustion
depletion of mental or physical resources
Feelings of Cynicism
depletion of social connection
Self-care
Self-care is a discipline requiring:
- tough-mindedness
- deep and personal understanding of your priorities
- respect for both yourself and the people you choose to spend your life with
Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)
self-report measure that includes scales for three burnout dimensions. This provides a score on each dimension indicating not whether you have burnout, but rather, your spot on a continium.
Recovery
The process of restoring energy and reducing strain. (important when work is strenuous and improves wellbeing and job performance)
How to fix burnout? (Inefficacy)
focus on boosting sense of self via compassion or other compassion (like counting wins and comfort)
How to fix burnout? (Exhaustion)
Engage in self-care (cook a meal, take a nap)
How to fix burnout? (Cynicism)
Self-care may not be effective because the self focus may lead to further withdrawal; instead one could focus on extending the self, opening up, and helping others (words of encouragement)
How can managers help burned out employees?
- encourage taking personal time with a colleague
- provide resources
show how the organization values self-care

organize happy hours and forced social events
