New Deal Programs

Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)

attempted to reduce farming surplus by paying farmers to kill excess livestock and to not plant portions of their land.

Civil Works Administration (CWA)

attempted to create thousands of jobs. They were very temporary, and were only available for hard labor during the winter.

Civil Conservation Corps (CCC)

skilled manual labor jobs related to the conservation and development of natural resources in rural lands.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)

provided deposit insurance to bank customers, securing people's incomes in banks. Also known as Glass- Steagall Act, which established it.

National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA)

allowed the President to regulate and allow monopolies in order to produce economic stability.

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)

Attempt to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing, and economic development in the Tennessee Valley, which was very affected by the Great Depression.

Civil Aeronautics Authority (CAA)

Gave the authorities the power to regulate airline fares and determine the routes (for non- military airfare).

National Youth Administration (NYA)

provided work to Americans ages 16-25.

Home Owners Loan Corporation (HOLC)

Refinanced home mortgages to prevent foreclosure. Sold bonds to lenders in exchange for the mortgages. Used to extend loans from shorter to longer term ones so people could pay them off.

Public Works Administration (PWA)

Large- scale public works construction agency. Built dams, hospitals, schools, etc.

Subsistence Homesteads Division (DSH)

Created communities that allowed poor urban people to live in safe, clean houses. In these communities, they learned how to produce enough food to be able to feed themselves.

National Recovery Administration (NRA)

Eliminated "cut- throat competition" by bringing industry, labor and government together to create set prices. This was intended to reduce destructive competition and to help workers by setting minimum wages, minimum prices for products and weekly hours.

Federal Surplus Relief Corporation (FSRC)

Diverted agricultural surpluses (animals, crops, etc.) in order to stabilize the economy.

Farm Credit Administration (FCA)

regulated and examined banks, associations, and related entities of the Farm Credit System. Farm Credit Act helped farmers refinance mortgages at below- market interest rates to help them recover from the Dust Bowl. This Act provided for the FCA.

Emergency Banking Act (EBA)

Allowed only government- approved banks to operate in the US.

Puerto Rico Reconstruction Administration (PRRA)

Attempted to provide all Puerto Ricans a place to live that will give them equal access to labor, security, and crops.

Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

Primarily responsible for enforcement of US Federal Securities laws and regulated the security industry.

National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)

Also known as Wagner Act. Conducted elections for labor union representation, and investigated and solved unfair labor practices. The Wagner Act established this.

Federal Communications Commission (FCC)

Works toward 6 goals: broadband, competition, spectrum, media, public safety and homeland security.

Federal Housing Administration (FHA)

Insured loans by banks for home building/ buying. Attempted to improve housing conditions, provide good home financing through insurance of mortgage loans, and stabalize the mortgage market.

Rural Electrification Administration (REA)

administered loan programs for electrification and telephone service in rural areas.

Social Security Board (SSB)

Created by the Social Security Act, this created the social security system in the US in order to limit "dangers" in modern life

Works Progress Administration (WPA)

Largest and most ambitious New Deal administration. This hired unskilled workers to do projects such as the construction of public buildings and roads, and operated large arts, drama, media, and literacy projects.

Drought Relief Service (DRS)

coordinated relief activities in response to the Dust Bowl. It purchased cattle to help people get by during the drought.

Resettlement Administration (RA)

relocated struggling urban and rural families to places owned and planned by the federal government to regulate the economy and subsist them.

National Labor Relations Act (NLRA)

Limited the ways for employers to act when faced with labor unions and strikes.

Federal Theater Project (FTP)

funded theatre to employ out- of- work artists, writers and directors, as well as to entertain poor families and to create art that was relevant to the hard times.

Federal Art Project (FAP)

Artists involved in this created posters, murals and paintings, etc., to employ out- of- work artists and to provide art for governmental buildings.

Federal Writer's Project (FWP)

Supported writers during the Depression by funding written work.

Social Security Administration (SSA)

Administers Social Security.

Federal Music Project (FMP)

mployed musicians, conductors, etc. during the Depression. They put on symphonies, concerts, music classes, etc.

Farm Security Administration (FSA)

Attempted at "rural rehabilitation" to improve the lifestyle of sharecroppers, tenants, poor farmers and to purchase land owned by farmers and resettle them in group farms on land more suitable for farming. This was opposed because it was bringing farms together to work on government- owned farms, and the farmers wanted ownership, so the program failed.

United States Maritime Composition (USMC)

Created by the Merchant Marine Act of 1936, this formulated a merchant shipbuilding program to design and build merchant cargo ships to replace the WWI ones.

United States Housing Authority(USHA)

Lent money to states or communities for low- cost construction.

Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

Established a national minimum wag, guaranteed "time- and- a- half" for overtime and set child labor laws.

Federal Works Agency (FWA)

Administered public construction, building maintenance and public works relief functions. This was an attempt to employ workers and to issue loans and grants to the places where the public works were taking place.

Federal Emergency Relief Act (FERA)

Created new jobs in local and state government to alleviate unemployment in families.
