What Greek word does the word "atom" originate from, and what does it mean?
It comes from the Greek word "Atomos", which means indivisible.

What is the structure of an atom as shown in this diagram?
All atoms are made up of a tiny central nucleus with electrons orbiting around it.
What is the definition of an element?
A pure substance made from only one type of atom.
What is the definition of an atom?

What is a compound?
A substance made from atoms of two or more different elements, bonded together.
In molecular diagrams, what does the overlap between atom circles represent?
A chemical bond.
What are the rules for writing a chemical formula?
Write the elemental symbol for each element in the compound. 2. Make sure each symbol starts with a capital letter. 3. If you have more than one atom of a certain element, write the number of atoms subscript after the element's symbol.
