Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
A technique used to produce many copies of a specific DNA sequence.
Denaturation
The first step in PCR; involves heating DNA to separate the double strands by breaking hydrogen bonds.
Extension
The third step in PCR where nucleotides are added to the 3' end of each primer to extend the DNA sequence.
Components needed for PCR
Includes DNA template, DNA polymerase, DNA primers, dNTPs, and buffer solution.
DNA Polymerase
Enzyme that adds nucleotides during PCR. Commonly used is Taq polymerase.
Pipette Techniques
A molecular biology technique utilizing micropipettes for transferring small volumes of liquids.
Gel Electrophoresis
Technique used to separate molecules based on size and charge by running an electric current through a gel.
Base Pairs (bp)
The distance of DNA fragments are measured in.
Genetic Engineering
Direct manipulation of genes for practical purposes.
Biotechnology
Manipulation of organisms and their biology to make useful products.
Cloning
Allows scientists to work with one specific gene.
CRISPR
A genetic engineering tool used to change a genetic sequence.
Plasmid
A vector used to carry target DNA.
Restriction Enzymes
Enzymes that cut DNA at specific sites.
DNA Ligases
Used to join DNA fragments together.
