Percent Composition
A breakdown of the percentages by mass of all the elements in a compound.
Percent Composition Formula
The mathematical relationship expressed as % composition=total mass of the compoundtotal mass of element in the compound×100%.

Percentage by Mass of an Element
A calculation equal to 100% times the ratio of the total mass of the element divided by the formula mass of the compound.
Percent Composition Conversion Factor
A ratio derived from percent composition values used to calculate how many grams of an element are in a given sample of a compound, or how many grams of a compound can be formed from a given mass of an element.
Mass Bases for Percent Composition
The two equivalent unit bases used to calculate percent composition: formula masses in atomic mass units or molar masses in gmol−1.
Percent Composition Applicability
The rule stating that the percent composition calculation is performed in the exact same way regardless of whether a compound is covalent or ionic.
