Hydrology
The scientific study that deals with the movement of water on the Earth's surface across various cyclical processes.
Evaporation
The fundamental hydrological process through which water changes from a liquid state to a gaseous state due to an increase in temperature and pressure.
Condensation
The cloud-formation process by which water vapor in a gaseous state changes into its liquid state at low temperatures.
Precipitation
The process where condensed atmospheric water falls back to the land surface as rain, snow, sleet, fog, or hail due to gravity.
Evapotranspiration
The total transfer of water from land to the atmosphere through soil evaporation and plant transpiration, accounting for about 10% of atmospheric vapor.
Transpiration
The process by which water evaporates from plant surfaces into gaseous form due to variations in temperature, humidity, and pressure.
Runoff
The portion of precipitation that is not absorbed or infiltrated by soil, collecting in rivers, seas, and oceans, and often driving soil erosion.
Infiltration
The process by which precipitated water is absorbed into the upper layers of soil and ground.
Groundwater
Water located beneath the Earth's surface that occupies part or all of the void spaces in soil or geological strata.
Porosity
The measurement of open space within rocks between grains, cracks, or cavities.
Permeability
The measurement of the ease with which fluids can move through a porous rock.
Aquifer
An underground layer of water-bearing permeable rock, rock fractures, or unconsolidated material.
Water Budget
A balance equation used to evaluate water availability and sustainability, stating that the rate of storage change equals inflow minus outflow.
Continental Shelf
The extended margin of a continent starting from the shoreline to the continental edge, covering 7.5% of total ocean area with an average width of 70–80km.
Continental Slope
The inclined region connecting the continental shelf to the continental rise, marked by an abrupt increase in slope gradient to about 1 in 20.
Continental Rise
The gentle slope and major depositional regime made of thick continental material that links the continental slope to the abyssal plain.
Abyssal Plain
The flat, smooth ocean basin region covered with fine sedimentary deposits such as clay and silt.
Mid-Oceanic Ridges
Underwater mountain chains created by divergent plate tectonics separated by central depressions.
Seamounts
Isolated volcanic ocean peaks with pointed summits rising 3,000–4,500m above the seafloor without breaking the surface.
Guyots
Flat-topped submerged volcanic mountains.
Trenches
Deep, narrow, steep-sided ocean floor depressions created by convergent plate boundaries.
Coral Reefs
Diverse marine ecosystems consisting of calcium carbonate structures secreted by colonies of tiny invertebrates called corals.
Atolls
Low-lying circular coral reefs in tropical oceans surrounding a central lagoon or body of water.
Photic Zone
The uppermost layer of the ocean extending to about 100m depth, characterized by nearly uniform temperature and salinity; also called the surface or mixed zone.
Thermocline
The middle oceanic layer between 100m and 1000m depth experiencing a rapid drop in temperature and an increase in water density.
Deep Zone
The deep ocean layer below 1000m depth containing 80% of all ocean water with stable temperatures near freezing.
Ocean Salinity
The total concentration of dissolved inorganic solids in ocean water, usually expressed in parts per thousand (ppt) or grams per kilogram.
Salt Budget
The cyclical movement of salt from oceans to lithosphere, atmosphere, and back, adding around 3 billion tons of salt to oceans annually.
Tide
The regular rise and fall of ocean water levels occurring once or twice daily, caused by the gravitational forces of the Moon and Sun and Earth's centrifugal force.
Spring Tides
High-magnitude tides occurring twice a month during new and full moons when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align in a straight line.
Neap Tides
Low-magnitude tides occurring when the Sun and Moon form a right angle (90∘) relative to the Earth.
Perigee
The position in the Moon's orbit where it is closest to Earth, creating unusually high tidal ranges.
Apogee
The position in the Moon's orbit where it is farthest from Earth, leading to lower-than-average tidal ranges.
Perihelion
The position in Earth's orbit closest to the Sun (around January 3rd), causing increased tidal ranges.
Aphelion
The position in Earth's orbit farthest from the Sun (around July 4th), causing decreased tidal ranges.
Ebb
The time period between high tide and low tide during which the ocean water level falls.
Flow
The time period between low tide and high tide during which the ocean water level rises.
Warm Ocean Currents
Large ocean water streams flowing from equatorial regions toward polar regions with higher surface temperatures.
Cold Ocean Currents
Large ocean water streams flowing from polar regions toward the equator with lower surface temperatures.
