GDL
Stands for Gradual driver license.
Aggressive driving
Improper acts such as speeding, failing to yield the right-of-way, and making improper turns that are not directed toward another specific driver.
Road rage
Occurs when a driver uses a vehicle or some other object to threaten or cause harm to another road user as a result of a traffic incident.
Suspension
The temporary removal of a person's license for a specific period, after which the license is returned.
Velocitation
Becoming used to how your vehicle sounds and feels at higher speeds.
Highway Hypnosis
A trance-like state that occurs when drivers fail to rest often enough to remain alert.
BAC
Blood alcohol concentration; the percent of alcohol in a person's bloodstream.
Synergistic effect
The combined effect is greater than the sum of the two effects separately when combining one or more drugs.
Hydroplaning
Occurs when water between the tires and the road builds until the tires begin to ride on a film of water, resulting in traction loss.
Understeer skid
Occurs when your front tires lose contact with the road surface.
Visual lead
The distance ahead that you search as you drive.
Stimulants
A drug that temporarily excites or accelerates the function of the central nervous system (CNS).
Depressants
A drug that temporarily decelerates the function of the central nervous system (CNS).
Hallucinogens
Mind-altering drugs that can distort the user's sense of reality.
Dissociative Anesthetics
Drugs that make users feel disconnected from their own bodies.
Narcotic Analgesics/Opioids
Drugs that are prescribed to help reduce chronic (long-term) and acute (sudden, severe) pain.
Inhalants
Vapor-based drugs that are inhaled into the body.
Cannabis/THC
A plant-based hallucinogenic drug that also can result in stimulant and depressant effects.
Basic Speed Law
Occurs when the driver takes into account their environment when choosing an appropriate speed (right speed for right now).
Oxidation
One of the three methods the body uses to eliminate alcohol (along with Breathing and Perspiring).
Visual Distractions
Distractions that involve taking your eyes off the road.
Manual Distractions
Distractions that involve taking your hands off the steering wheel.
Cognitive Distractions
Distractions that involve taking your mind off the task of driving.
Odd-numbered Interstate
Indicates a route that runs North and South.
Even-numbered Interstate
Indicates a route that runs East and West.
