Enteral drugs

14
New cards

Parenteral drugs

15
New cards

intravenous injection

Delivers medicine directly into a vein. Used when a medication is needed quickly, if the liquid cannot be taken by mouth, or if it is too irritating for intramuscular or subcutaneous injections.

16
New cards

intramuscular injection

Delivers medicine into muscle tissue where it can be quickly absorbed by the bloodstream. Used to administer medication more quickly than a subcutaneous injection and is easier to administer than an IV.

17
New cards

subcutaneous injection

Delivers medicine into the tissue layer under the skin and above the muscle. Used to deliver medicine quickly, but it takes longer to go into effect than IV as it needs time to diffuse into the body.

18
New cards

phlebotomist

trained to draw blood from patients who require testing as well as blood donors

19
New cards

semipermeable

smaller molecules are able to pass through, but large molecules are not.

20
New cards

Isotonic solutions:

  • The concentration of solutes in the solution outside the cell is the same as inside the cell.  In this case, water moves into and out of the cell at equal rates.  There is no net movement of water.

21
New cards

Hypotonic solutions

  • The concentration of solutes outside the cell is less than inside the cell (which means there is more water outside the cell).  Water therefore moves into the cell and the cell swells (Ex: swimming too long causes fingers to prune)

22
New cards

Hypertonic solutions:

  • The concentration of solutes outside the cell is greater than inside the cell (which means there is less water outside the cell).  Water moves out of the cell and the cell shrinks.

23
New cards
