Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
A planned system of policies, procedures, and practices designed to prevent accidents, illnesses, injuries, and equipment damage in the workplace.
Golden Rule of OHS
Never assume that a computer is safe. Inspect the equipment and isolate all power sources before touching its internal components.
Physical Hazards
Workplace risks including cluttered work areas, loose cables in walkways, sharp metal chassis edges, and heavy equipment that may fall.
Chemical Hazards
Workplace risks including soldering fumes, thermal compound, Isopropyl alcohol or IPA, and cleaning sprays and solvents.
Electrical Hazards
Workplace risks including frayed electrical cables, exposed conductors, ungrounded equipment, and working on a computer connected to an outlet.
Ergonomic Hazards
Workplace risks including incorrect lifting postures, poor desk lighting, improper chair height, and repetitive keyboard and mouse use.
Safety goggles
Personal protective equipment that protects the eyes from wire clippings, solder, and cleaning sprays.
Anti-dust mask
Personal protective equipment designed to reduce the inhalation of dust and fumes.
Anti-static wrist straps
Personal protective equipment designed to safely direct static electricity away from electronic components.
Rubber-soled shoes
Footwear that provides additional electrical insulation.
Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
The sudden transfer of static electricity between objects, which may damage sensitive computer components even when no spark is seen or felt.
Six-Step Service Path
A professional workflow used when receiving, diagnosing, repairing, testing, and returning a computer.
Receive (Step 1)
The phase of the Six-Step Service Path where the technician accepts the device, interviews the customer, records device details and damage, and creates a service ticket.
Protect (Step 2)
The phase of the Six-Step Service Path where the technician protects customer data and hardware by backing up files, using anti-static mats/straps, and placing protective padding.
Diagnose (Step 3)
The phase of the Six-Step Service Path where the technician isolates the problem and determines its root cause through BIOS checks, diagnostic tools, and barebones troubleshooting.
Repair (Step 4)
The phase of the Six-Step Service Path where the technician corrects identified problems, such as replacing defective RAM, storage drives, or power supplies.
