Dentition

All of the natural teeth in their normal position in the mouth

Primary Dentition

The first set of 20 teeth (all will get replaced by permanent teeth)

Mixed dentition

The stage when a child has some primary teeth and some permanent teeth

Permanent dentition

The adult set of 32 teeth, designed to last a lifetime

Eruption

The movement of a tooth into its normal working position in the mouth

Pedodontics

Dental specialty dealing with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dental disorders in children

Dental Arches

The teeth arranged in the upper and lower jaws

Maxilla

The upper jaw ; it is fixed and does not move independently

Mandible

The lower jaw '; it is the moveable jaw

Maxillary arch

The arch formed by the teeth in the mandible (lower jaw)

TMJ ( Temporomandibular joint)

The hinge joint connecting the mandible to the skull that allows the jaw to move

Occlusion

The relationship between the maxillary and mandibular teeth when they meet in normal contact.

Malocclusion (Mal = Bad)

An irregularity in the positioning and relationship of the teeth; essentially bad occlusion

Orthodontist

A dental specialist who deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of malocclusion and irregularities of teeth and arches

Midline

An imaginary line through the middle of the face and head that divides each arch into two halves

Quadrants

One of the 4 sections of the mouth created by dividing the upper and lower arches at the midline (each quadrant has 8 teeth)

Memory Tricks

• MAXillary = MAXimum/top → upper jaw

• MANDible = MOVABLE → lower jaw moves

• MALocclusion = MAL = bad → bad/incorrect occlusion

• ORTHOdontist → think “straightening teeth”

• 4 quadrants = 2 arches × 2 halves

• Primary = 20

• Permanent = 32

• Mixed = primary + permanent together

• Eruption = tooth “comes out” into position
