Post-production
is the stage after production wherein all audio and visual elements are edited to create a finished film feature or video material. It involves a collaborative team with various roles and tasks:
Editing
is the assembly of shots, the addition of music and sounds, the enhancement of visuals through VFX or computer graphics and coloring. All these elements, when put together properly and competently, create a multi sensory experience for the viewers.
Beginnings
The first short films were static shots of long takes. People were afraid to edit because they assumed that splicing different shots would confuse the audience.
1890: The Kinetograph
Thomas Edison and William Dickson pioneer celluloid film with the Kinetograph.
1900s: Cutting with Scissors
Scissors and tape used for editing, allowing color, transitions, close-ups, and special effects.
1924: The Moviola
The world’s first successful editing machine invented by Iwan Serrurier.
1934: The Academy Awards
The first award for Best Editing given to the 1933 film Eskimo by W.S. Van Dyke.
1956: The AMPEX VTR
The first video tape recorder, the AMPEX, was released. It records video and audio using magnetic tapes.
1971: CMX-600
The first computerised non-linear editor or NLE, mainly introduced for offline editing.
Linear Editing
A method used with analogue video tapes and films.
Non-linear Editing
Achieved by loading video material into a computer, allowing flexibility in scene order and enhancements.
Offline Editing
Building the draft based on a creative treatment or storyboard, usually done using low-res files.
Online Editing
Polishing the rough cut, reconnecting low-res files to full-quality footage, and adding final touches.
1984: The EDITDROID
Lucas Films creates a computer workstation for random access editing
1989: The Editing Software
AVID introduces a non-linear editing software, followed by Adobe Premiere 1.0 in 1991.
1994-1995: DIGITAL EDITING REVOLUTION
By 1995, the number of digitally edited films grew exponentially.
2015: DIGITAL DOMINANCE
Digital movie cameras, film distribution, projection, and editing software now dominate the industry.
Color Correction
Adjust white and black levels, exposure, ISO noise, contrast, etc.
Color Grading
Creates a visual tone for the entire material. Enhances the aesthetics of visuals.
