Lesion
A mark on the skin that may indicate an injury or damage that changes the structure of tissues or organs
Primary Lesion
Lesions that are a different color than the color of the skin
Bulla
A blistering containing watery fluid
Macula
A flat spot or discoloration on skin
Papule
A small elevation on the skin that contains no fluid but may develop pus
Pustule
Formed from papule when dead white blood cells accumulate in it
Wheal
An itchy, swollen lesion that can be caused by the blow, scratch, bite of an insect, urticaria/skin allergy, or the sting of a nettle
Secondary skin lesions
Characterized by piles of materials on the skin surface, or by depressions in skin surface
Excoriation
Skin sore or abrasion produced by scratching or scraping
Fissure
Crack in skin penetrating into the dermis
Keloid
Thick scar resulting from excessive growth of fibrous tissue
Ulcer
Open lesion on the skin or mucous membrane of the body; accompanied by loss of skin depth and possibly weeping fluid or pus

Hair follicle filled with keratin and sebum

Keratin-filled cysts that appear just under the epidermis and have no visible opening; benign
Acne

Sebhorreic Dermatitis
Skin condition caused by an inflammation of the sebaceous glands; characterized by redness, dry or oily scaling, stubborn dandruff, itching
Anhidrosis
The inability to sweat; caused by autonomic nerves
Bromidrosis
Sweat has an odor; caused by bacteria
Hyperhidrosis
Excessive sweating; caused by body weakness or heat
Conjunctivitis
Caused by bacteria; characterized by red and watery eyes; also called pink eye CONTAGIOUS
Eczema
Inflammatory, uncomfortable, often chronic skin condition characterized by dry, itching, painful skin
Herpes Simplex I
Contagious recurring viral infection that often presents as a fever blister or cold sore, mostly asymptomatic
Impetigo
Contagious bacterial skin infection characterized by weeping lesions; usually caused by staphylococcus bacteria
Psoriasis
Characterized by red patches covered with silver-white scales
Leukoderma
Characterized by light, abnormal patches HYPOPIGMENTATION
Nevus
Small or large malformation of the skin due to abnormal pigmentation; also called birthmark
Stain
Abnormal brow or red skin patches, having a circular or irregular shape
Vitiligo
Hereditary condition that causes HYPOpigmented spots
Keratoma
An acquired superficial (surface) round, thickened patch of epidermis; callus
Basal cell carcinoma
Most common, least severe skin cancer; 90% survival rate when caught and treated early
Squamous cell carcinoma
Characterized by scaly red papules or nodules; survival rate depends on stage at diagnosis
Malignant melanoma
Characterized by black or dark brown patches on skin that may appear uneven in texture, jagged, or raised; 100% fatal if left untreated
Contact dermatitis
An inflammation of the skin caused by having contact with certain chemicals or substances
