Atom
The smallest particle that when reproduced many times will make up matter (Solid, Liquids and Gases)
Compound
A pure substance made up of two or more different elements chemically bonded together.
Molecules
Two or more atoms chemically bonded together. It could be an element or a compound.
Polyatomic Ion
A charged molecule composed of two or more atoms covalently bonded together.
Monatomic
An element that consists of single uncombined atoms.
Diatomic
An element that exists as two of the same atoms bonded together.
Atomic number
The number of protons in the nucleus of the atom.
Mass Number
The number of protons plus neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Ion
An atom that has lost of gained electrons
Ionic Bonding
The attraction of positive and negative ions for each other in a lattice.
Nucleus
contains positively charged protons and neutrons
Region of Space
Contains tiny positive electrons moving around very fast; often called an “electron cloud”
Element
A substance containing one type of atom that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
Ionic bonds
The chemical bonds that hold metal and non-metal ions together in an ionic compound
