Forms of Government

Anarchism

A form of government with no ruling hierarchy; decisions are made democratically by citizens.

Aristocracy

A form of government in which a select few rule based on inherited hereditary right.

Autocracy

A form of government in which political power is held by a single, self-appointed ruler.

Communism

A political theory derived from Karl Marx, advocating class war leading to publicly owned property.

Democracy

A range of government types based on the 'consent of the governed,' often practiced in the form of a republic.

Despotism

Rule by an all-powerful individual; a less polite term for 'autocracy'.

Dictatorship

Rule by a person exercising absolute power without hereditary succession.

Fascism

Rule by a totalitarian and corporatist government, also known as Nazism or Corporatism.

Feudalism

Government by hereditary military landowners who provide protection in exchange for goods and services.

Monarchy

Rule by an individual for life or until abdication, often hereditary.

Oligarchy

A form of government in which power rests with a small elite, distinguished by various statuses.

Plutocracy

Rule by the wealthy; power derived from wealth.

Republic

Non-monarchical governments where eligibility to rule is determined by law; ruled by elected representatives.

Socialism

A state run by a communist party with resources distributed by need and produced by ability.

Theocracy

A form of government where a god is recognized as the supreme ruler, often led by religious leaders.

Tyranny

Rule by a selfish or unjust single ruler who uses power oppressively.
