Base Unit for Mass
The standard metric unit for mass, which is grams, whereas kilograms includes the prefix multiplier kilo.
Prefix Multipliers
Symbols or exponents added before base units that allow scientists to conveniently express very large or very small numbers without writing trailing or leading zeros.
Kilo- (k)
A prefix multiplier representing 103 or 1000.
Femto- (f)
A prefix multiplier representing 10−15.
Nano- (n)
A prefix multiplier representing 10−9.
Pico- (p)
A prefix multiplier representing 10−12.
Angstrom
A unit of length equal to 10−10m, typically used when referring to atomic sizes.
Four-Step Problem-Solving Approach
A structured method for solving chemistry conversion problems consisting of four steps: sort, strategize, solve, and check.
Sort Step
The initial step in problem solving where you identify useful information and isolate the given starting number.
Strategize Step
The step in problem solving where you draw a conceptual plan and set up conversion factors as fractions with appropriate units.
Solve Step
The step in problem solving where you calculate the mathematical solution by multiplying numbers on top of fractions and dividing by numbers on the bottom.
Check Step
The final step in problem solving where you verify that units cancel out, check significant figures, and confirm the reasonableness of the numerical result.
Dimensional Analysis
A method of problem solving that treats units like algebraic quantities, canceling them out when they appear on opposite sides of a fraction.
Cubic Centimeter (cc)
A unit of volume (1cm3) that is exactly equivalent to one milliliter (1mL).
Monolayer
A single two-dimensional surface array or layer of compounds or ligands that is one layer thick.
