Gustatory receptors
Specialized nerve cell tips located in the tongue that are responsible for detecting taste.
Olfactory receptors
Specialized nerve cell tips located in the nose that are responsible for detecting smell.
Neuron
An organized network of nerve cells specialized for conducting information via electrical impulses from one part of the body to another.
Dendrite
The specialized tip of a nerve cell where information is acquired and a chemical reaction sets off an electrical impulse.
Axon
The part of a neuron through which an electrical impulse travels from the cell body to the nerve ending.
Synapse
The gap at the end of an axon where electrical impulses trigger the release of chemicals that start an impulse in the dendrite of the next neuron.
Neuromuscular Junction
A specialized synapse that allows the delivery of nervous impulses from neurons to muscle cells or glands.
Receptors
Specialized tips of nerve cells, usually located in sense organs like the inner ear, nose, and tongue, that detect information from the environment.
Cell body
The part of the nerve cell located between the dendrite and the axon that the electrical impulse passes through.
Nervous tissue
Tissue made up of an organized network of neurons specialized for conducting information via electrical impulses.
