hangs off hypothalamus by the stalk… has portal circulation first set of capillaries is hypothalamus and second is anterior pituitary.
Anterior Pituitary
derived from tissue located behind nasal mucosa in embryo, composed of epithelial cells
posterior pituitary
direct downward extension of tissue from hypothalamus and composed of neural tissue.

Hypothalamo-Hypophysial Tract
2 hormones Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) and Oxytocin (released by posterior pit.) synthesized in nerve cell bodies up in hypothalamus. They are carried via axons down posterior pit. for release. These axons make up this tract bc of the origin and ending.

Thymus
located behind sternum, greatest size ages 5/6 and involutes (shrinks) in adulthood.
Thyroid gland
located beneath Adams apple in front of neck. Has two lobes and connected by isthmus.
Parathyroid gland
Normally around four tiny glands, each one located at corner of posterior surface of thyroid gland. People can have between 3-11 of these.
Adrenal gland
two adrenals each sitting on top of kidneys. It is shaped like a triangle with a superficial cortex composed of three layers. Glomerulosa, fasciaulata, reticular, and deepest part = medulla.
Pancreatic Islets
deep within pancreas, ball shaped collection of cells that synthesize/release pancreatic hormones. This is endocrine function of pancreas. Synthesis/release of digestive enzymes is exocrine function.
Ovary
Female gonad- located at junction of abdominal and pelvic cavities, at pelvic inlet of pelvis. Each ovary has superficial cortex where ovum(egg) maturation occurs and a deep medulla where blood supply is located. Each ovary has stroma- a series of proteins deep in gonad that supports shape. Exocrine function- produce egg Endocrine function- produce/release estrogen/progesterone
Testis
Male gonad- Exocrine function- production of sperm endocrine function- production of testosterone
