Instrumental Leadership
A type of leadership that focuses on achieving goals, maintaining productivity, and ensuring that tasks are completed.
Expressive Leadership
A type of leadership that focuses on maintaining group cohesion, warm relationships, and the collective well-being of the group.
Instrumental Reasons
The motivation to join social groups so that other members can help accomplish specific tasks.
Expressive Reasons
The emotional motivation to join social groups for companionship, love, and security.
Authoritarian Decision-Making
A decision-making style where leaders make decisions on their own with no input from members and demand compliance.
Democratic Decision-Making
A leadership style that encourages group discussion and believes in reaching decisions through consensus.
Laissez-Faire Decision-Making
A style where leaders are only minimally involved and let the group make their own decisions; the term loosely translates from French as 'to leave alone.'
Consensus
A collective agreement reached through group discussion, which is a hallmark of the democratic leadership style.
