A bear behavior where it moves toward a person as though charging but stops short or veers off to the side.
Black Bear Attack Protocol
The emergency response where victims should yell, bang pots, and fight back with everything possible; they should NOT play dead.
Grizzly/Brown Bear Attack Protocol
The emergency response where if bear spray is ineffective, the victim should play dead by laying with hands covering the head and legs spread apart.
Brown Recluse
A venomous spider identifiable by a dark violin-shaped design and six eyes arranged in two rows.
Arm Guard
Archery gear worn on the inside of the non-dominant arm from the wrist to the elbow to protect the skin from the bow string.
Index Vane
The differently colored fletching on an arrow that must face the non-dominant hand during the arrow position setup.
Mineral Soil
Sandy or rocky soil containing very little organic matter, such as decaying leaves, used for building safe fire pits.
Backpacking Zone 2
The middle back area of a pack, closest to the center of gravity, where the heaviest items like the tent body and cookware should be placed.
Hydration Reservoir Weight
A heavy essential where one liter weighs 2.2extlbs or 1,000extgrams, requiring it to be placed in the center of the backpack.
Magnetic Needle
The part of a compass that floats inside the housing; the red end always points north when held level.
Bearing
The direction you want to travel from your position to another in relation to magnetic north, measured in 360exto.
Contour Interval
The change in height between two adjacent contour lines on a topographical map.
Declination
The angle between magnetic north (direction the needle points) and true north (direction to the North Pole).
Camel Up
A hiking term meaning to drink water whenever you stumble across it on your hike.
Uphill Right of Way
The trail etiquette rule stating that hikers traveling uphill have the right of way over those going downhill.
Tinder
Small natural material such as dry wood shavings, dried pine needles, or charred cloth that burns instantly upon contact with a flame.
Punk
Flammable material used for catching a spark struck from flint and steel, such as charred cloth or dryer lint.
Bit
The sharp cutting edge of a hatchet head.
Square Knot
A knot used for joining two ropes of equal thickness; also known as a reef knot.
Sheet Bend
An important knot used for joining two rope ends of different thicknesses.
Clove Hitch
A widely used knot for attaching a rope to a pole with little strain and as a starting knot for lashings.
Frapping
The process of wrapping rope between two sticks over a lashing to pull it tight and make it strong.
SAM
A mnemonic for medical interviews standing for Signs and Symptoms, Allergies, and Medications.
Anaphylaxis
A severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that can include swelling of the face, trouble breathing, and signs of shock.
Cardiac Arrest
A condition where the heart stops beating or beats too ineffectively to circulate blood, requiring immediate CPR and an AED.
Hypothermia
A life-threatening emergency where the internal body temperature falls below 95extoextF (35extoextC).
FAST
A quick check for stroke symptoms standing for Face (drooping), Arm (weakness), Speech (difficulty), and Time (determine onset).
Rule of Three
The survival guideline stating you can survive three minutes without air, three hours without shelter, three days without water, and three weeks without food.
Water Transpiration Still
A water procurement system involving tying a clear plastic bag over a leafy, non-toxic tree limb to collect moisture.
Water Hemlock
One of the most toxic plants in North America, featuring small white flowers in umbrella-like clusters and hollow stems.
