What is apoptosis?
Programmed cell death
What are apoptosis and mitosis regulated by?
Hox genes
Apoptosis Method
Apoptosis is triggered by transcription factors, made by the Hox genes causing the cytoskeleton to be broken down by enzymes/lysosomes.
Blebs form due to changes in the cell surface membrane
The blebs will eventually form segments, and the cell breaks off in segments
The segments are then digested in the process of phagocytosis.
Apoptosis and Mitosis in Development
In development, we need mitosis for growth, but we also need apoptosis to break down cells, like between fingers and toes.
Why don't fingers break apart?
The hox gene hasn't produced the transcription factors. Therefore, molecules signalling apoptosis haven't been made, therefore apoptosis hasn't occurred
