Clay is made out of…
Natural Minerals ex: Silica, Alumina, or Magnesia. And or Water
Earth ware
Terre Cotta. Earth tones, low-fire clay body
Porcelain
China, sinks, toilets, ect. High fire, very white and pure clay body.
Stone Ware
Low fire, high fire, white or earth toned. Pots and Vases
What is step 2
Leather Hard: It is strong and it is good for carving and inlays.
What is step 1
Wet Plastic: Malleable and workable. It is good for attachments and forming
What is step 3
Greenware: It is dry and cold. It is good for sponging off bumps and …boogers. Inlays, underglaze and slip decor is good for the greenware.
What is step 4
Bone Dry: The clay is completely dehydrated and extremely fragile.
What is step 5
Bisque Ware: The clay went through chemical change. This step is good for under glaze, and glaze.
What is step 6
Glazed Ceramic: Final chemical change, no more changes can be made.
Stages of Vitrification
It is the stages of change for when clay is fired in a kiln.
Bisque Firing
Cone 04 (1945 deg F)
Glaze Firing
Bottoms are sponged completely of free glaze. Glaze is raw material. Cone 6 (2232 deg F)
Platelets
This is what clay is made out of. They are made like a brick wall.
Wedging
Used to recombine platelets and to get rid of air bubbles and prevent cracking.
Storing clay steps
Work on a canvas
Build on a board - covered in wet paper towels so it dont stick
Wrap project in wet paper towels for storing
Put board in a plastic bag, then spray the outside with water
Slipping & Scoring
Used to attach pieces to other clay. You confuse platelets by scratching both of the surfaces with a serrated metal rib. Then use slip to blend in the pieces together.
When do you refine
After you finish building you wait until the clay is in the leather hard stage or the green ware stage. This way you wont mess up the already smoothed out parts.
Serrated Metal Rib
Used for scoring
Smooth metal rib
Used for smoothing things out and compressing clay
Rubber Rib
Used for smoothing things out and compressing clay
Wooden Rib
Used for smoothing things out and compressing clay
Fetting knife
Used to cut out pieces of clay for parts.
Wire Cutter
Used to cut apart blocks of clay.
Pin tool
Used for small details
Wooden Modeling Tool
Used to smooth out cracks and blend in slip and scored pieces.
Carving tools
Used to carve out thick pieces and used to cut out shapes.
