to swage long lengths of material
not uncommon but hard to do with a single stroke because dies would need to be very long
rotary swaging
dies incorporate CAMS at their far ends, which are actuated by a ring of cam followers located around the periphery
rotation of the ring of cams
results in the dies being simultaneously driven inwards and withdrawn outwards in radial reciprocating motion
feeding the workpiece through the center of the dies
it is possible to swage long work pieces in steps from one end to the other
same method used by firearms to create
cold ahmmer forged barrels for long guns
cold hammer forged barrels are ? mandrel used?
not forged they are rotary swaged and a twisted mandrel is used in the center to leave an impression for rifling inside the bore
the mandrel is removed
by pulling and twisting motions
the resulting grain flow
follows the contours of the barrel, bore and rifling grooves, and is very strong
not obvious thing that was made by swaging
screw driver - require strength and cutting grooves would round out when contacted with screw - no mandrel required since the screwdriver is not hollow
forging/swaging products produce
discrete components - and does so with dies that travel linearly
