Battle of Tannenburg

Russia tries to invade German territory, divided in to halves with Rennenkampf leading the north and Samson leading the southeast. Communication was interrupted and ended as a huge failure for the Russians.

first indication of what the rest of the war will be like, huge numbers (4.5 Allies, 5.4 million Central) and huge causalities (145,000 Allied, 100,000 Central). Rose colored glasses coming off.

Gallipoli

Central power win, Churchill tries to open a new front from the Ottoman Empire to get supplies to Russia. Paves way for Australian and New Zealand independence.

They needed to transport Allied troops to the battlefront quickly so the taxi drivers drove soldiers to front lines.

British cruise liner sunk by German U-boat, first motivation for US to join the war.

Strike first, worry later mentality. Germany promised to stop for the US after the sinking of the RMS Lusitania

Secret pact between Allied Powers and Italy, promise was to give Italy coastal A-H, Albania, Valona Port city, Ottoman territory.
