What is aid?
Where money is transferred from a wealthier country to poorer country
What is short-term aid?
Often after an emergency to help provide materials to help recover
What is long-term aid?
Given over a long time to help develop a country or region
What is bilateral aid?
Aid from one country to another
What is multilateral aid?
Aid from a number of countries (usually through organisations) to one country
What is charitable aid?
Money given by charities such as Oxfam
Disadvantages of short-term aid
If it doesn’t go towards developing the country it may lead to reliance
Disadvantages to long-term aid
It may not go towards developing those who need it most
Disadvantages of charitable aid
It relies on donations which there may be a lack of
What is fairtrade?
A programme which ensures farmers/ producers in LICs and NICs are given guaranteed a fair income for their goods and improves social and economical standards
Why is fairtrade needed?
As lots of farmers in LICs sell their material not products so prices fluctuate and they arent guaranteed how much they earn so it influences them to sell good materials for less to companies
Benefits of fair trade
Guarantees a consistent and fair wage to workers and producers, prevents child and slave labour (has to meet UN requirements), and provides money to improve local areas
Benefits of all aid
Provides support to struggling areas, creates new jobs and improves economy and creates long term improvement to environment and quality of life
Negatives to aid
Relies on HICs, focused on urban areas so rural areas stay in poverty and it doesn’t always help people who need it
