Saliva

Composition of Saliva
97% water, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride), secretory proteins (like amylase), immunoglobulins, and small organic molecules.
Bacteriostatic
Substances that stop the progression of bacteria.
Bactericidal
Substances that are aggressive and kill bacteria.
Buffering
The action of neutralizing acids in saliva with bicarbonate and phosphate to maintain a slightly alkaline environment.
Taste Pores
Tiny openings that allow substances to penetrate into taste buds.
Amylase
An enzyme in saliva that breaks down carbohydrates and starches.
Exocrine Glands
Glands that have ducts and secrete substances onto epithelial surfaces.
Mucous Acini
Secretory cells in salivary glands that produce mucus.
Serous Acini
Secretory cells in salivary glands that produce a watery secretion.
Xerostomia
A condition characterized by dry mouth due to decreased saliva secretion.
Sjogren's Syndrome
An autoimmune disease that leads to dry mouth and reduced saliva production.
Wharton's Duct
The main duct of the submandibular gland, draining saliva into the oral cavity.
Bartholin's Duct
The duct associated with the sublingual salivary gland.
Minor Salivary Glands
Small glands distributed throughout the submucosa of the oral cavity.
