Three classifications of Fractures
Position of bone, Completeness of break, Whether or not bone penetrates skin
Two positions of bone in fracture(Explain)
Non Displaced: Bone retains normal position
Displaced: Bone ends out of normal alignment
Two completeness of break in fracture(Explain)
Complete fracture: Bone is broken through
Incomplete fracture: Bone is not broken through
Penetrate or not in fracture(Explain)
Open/ compound: bone ends penetrate the skin
Closed/ simple: bone ends do not penetrate the skin
4 Steps of fracture repair
Hematoma forms, Fibrocartilage callus forms, Body callus forms, Body remodeling
Hematoma forms
Hemorrhaged blood clots form hematoma at fracture site, site becomes swollen and inflamed
Fibrocartilage callus forms
Fibroblasts make collagen fibers that connect bone ends, chondroblasts secrete martix that forms fibrocartilage callus
Body callus forms
Osteoblasts transport trabeculae and form spongy bone, fibrocartilage callus replaced by immature bone that turns to bony callus
Bone remodeling occurs
Compact bone layed down, bony callus remodeled
Where does the word “skeleton” come from
Greek word meaning “dried up body” or “mummy”
