Methylprednisolone
A corticosteroid used to decrease inflammation and suppress immune response.
Mechanism of Action
Decreases inflammation by stabilizing leukocyte lysosomal membranes and suppressing pituitary release of corticotrophin.
Indications
Conditions where Methylprednisolone is used include anaphylaxis, asthma/bronchospasm, and exacerbation of COPD.
Contraindications
Systemic infections and septic shock are contraindications for Methylprednisolone use.
Dose
The recommended dosage is 80 to 125mg IV/IM.
Side Effects
Fluid retention, CHF, HTN, abdominal distention, vertigo, headache, nausea, malaise, and hiccups.
Precautions
Only a single dose should be given; long term steroid therapy risks include gastrointestinal bleeding and suppression of adrenocortical steroids.
