Reaction time
The time it takes to get your foot off the gas and onto the brake once you see a hazard.
Perception Distance
The distance your vehicle travels during the time a driver sees a situation ahead.
Braking distance
The distance in how far a vehicle travels after the driver presses the brake pedal.
Passive Restraint device
Airbag
Active Restraint Device.
Seatbelt
Energy of motion
Kinetic energy or the energy an object has because it is moving
Center of gravity
The point around which all of the object’s weight is evenly balanced.
Treads
Tire tread refers to the pattern of grooves, channels, and raised rubber on the surface of a tire that comes into contact with the road.
Gravity
A force that pulls objects toward the center of the earth.
Force of impact
The force with which a moving object hits another object
Friction
The resistance to motion of one surface over or against another.
Traction
The adhesive or holding quality of friction – the gripping action
Inertia
The tendency of an object at rest to stay at rest, and of an object in motion to stay in motion
Centrifugal
A force that keeps your car moving in a straight line.
Penny test
Place a penny in the grove of your tire, if you can see the head then its time to replace the tires
Split or Divided Traction
The laws of nature dictate that you can use all of your traction for steering use all of your traction for braking
Banked Curved
When a turn in the road is designed to be higher on one side than the other
List at least 3 factors that will affect a person’s reaction time?
Distractions
Sleepness
Drug/ alcohol
How does the weight of a larger vehicle influence what that vehicle can or cannot do?
When the weight of an object doubles you need twice the distance to stop the object.
What happens to the center of gravity on a large 4x4 type vehicle?
Jeeps and large vans have difficulty cornering at fast speeds because of raised center of gravity and can tip over during fast turns.
How do tires and inflation influence a vehicle’s traction?
outside/center edges: loss of control & premature tire failure
What are the 4 factors that can affect a car going into a curve?
Speed
Weight
Road shape
Sharp curves
What three (3) factors determine total stopping distance and explain each part?
Perception
Reaction
Braking
Describe the three (3) collisions that occur in a crash?
1st Collision –The Vehicle against another object.
2nd Collision –The driver against the wind shield
3rd Collision –The Driver’s Internal Organs against the skeletal system.
Describe the three (3) factors that affect the force of impact?
Vehicle speed
Vehichle weight
Distractions between impact and stopping
