step 1
Put weighing paper on the balance, Tare/zero it.
Handle the 200.00 g standard mass with a Kimwipe, and put the standard mass on the balance.
Record the mass, Remove the mass, Re-tare if needed.
Repeat until you have 3 measurements.
Step 2a
weight a dry 50 mL beaker on the top balance and record what it says
add 30 ml of water and record what it says and record the volume water added.
do it again two more times
step 2b
weight a dry 10 ml Graduated Cylinder on the top balance and record what it says
add 5 ml of deionized water to the Graduated Cylinder and record what it say
also record what the volume of water says
do this again two more times
Step 2c
get a Buret and make sure the Stopcock is closed and place a waste beaker below the Buret before filling it with DI water
let the water run through the buret until the tip is filled.
fill the buret below the start of the graduate cylinder and record it 2 decimal places (initial volume)
weight the dry 30 ml beaker and record it and place below buret
use the buret to delivey 10 ml of water to the 30 ml beaker and record the final volume
touch the tip of the buret to the inside wall of the beaker and weigh the beaker and water
do it again 2 more times
step 4
Get the numbered unknown metal from your TA and write a short description of it on your data sheet—appearance/shape.
Weigh the dry metal and record its mass
Put about 20–25 mL of DI water into a 50 mL graduated cylinder.
Record the water volume to the nearest tenth.
Tilt the graduated cylinder and gently slide the metal down the side—don’t drop it, because the glass could break.
Make sure the metal is completely submerged, Put the cylinder upright and record the new water level to the nearest tenth.
Repeat the water-displacement measurement one more time, Dry the metal and return it to its container.
Before part 2
I fill a 250 mL beaker with deionized water and let it stand for 5 mins and use a thermometer to record water temperature.
Record the temperature of the water at the top of Part 2.
Use the water-density table to find the density of water at that temperature.
Step 3
I weight the 10 mL graduate cylinder and record it on my paper, then I add 2 mL of deionized water in it and record the volume of volume just added
you then weight the mass of the 10 mL graduate cylinder with the added 2 ml, then add another 2 ml to the graduate cylinder and observe the volume of the 4 ml now in the cylinder.
you then do it all the way up until there are 10 ml in the graduate cylinder
