the mouth & pharynx
-aids with chemical & mechanical digestion
-chemical: saliva in the mouth has enymes that moistens/binds the food together into a bolus, also dissolves chemicals so you can taste
-mechanical: teeth grind food into smaller bits
1) saliva
-mix of mucus & fluids
-moistens & binds food together into a bolus
2) how food travels from mouth —> stomach
Esophagus
-muscular waves move the food down the esophagus —> peristalsis
3)peritoneum
a layer of tissue that holds our organs in place
4)role of stomach in digestion
-has muscles that move in 3 directions —> movemnent helps to break down food
-rugae: folds in the stomach (muscles) that are present when the stomach is empty
-the stomach is acidic which aids in digestion
-mucus in the stomach: protects tissues from acid
-gastric pits: release chemicals to aid in digestion
-chief cells: release pepsinogen
-parietal cells: release HCI
-chyme: mass of partly digested food expelled by the stomach into the duodenum
5)gastric pits (in stomach)
release chemicals to aid in digestion
-pepsin: enzyme that digests protein
-HCI: acid that activates pepsin
-mucus: protects tissue
6)function of pancreas in digestion
makes digestive enzymes that break down food
-secretes enyzmes into duodenum
-alkaline (basic) neutralizes acidic chyme
7)bile/gallbladder
-bile: a yellow/green water solution that breaks down fats, formed by the liver
-gallbladder: stores bile
8)small intestine
-most food digested here
-so long: so that all food can be digested
-absorbtion of nutrients:
villi: small fingerlike projections found on SI
microvilli: further facilitate absorption of nutrients, tiny projections of plasma membrane
-3 parts of SI: 1 duodenum, 2 jejunum, 3 illium
9)large intestine
-main goal: absorption of water & some vitamins
-has haustra (bumps that slow down progression of food through intestine so that water can be absorbed)
-no digestive enzymes
-dries out indigestible food —> feces
-appendix: hangs from LI & contains good bacteria
