Species
-A group of organisms that are more or less alike
-Can produce fertile offspring
Reproductive isolation
Barriers that prevent interbreeding between species - helps to maintain distinct species.
Pre-zygotic barriers
Barriers that prevent mating or fertilization before a zygote is formed.
Post-zygotic barriers
Barriers that occur after fertilisation and prevent the maturation of the offspring.
Temporal isolation
Reproductive isolation due to different timing of mating/flowering.
Behavioural isolation
Reproductive isolation due to differences in courting behaviors, signals, or pheromones.
Mechanical isolation
Reproductive isolation caused by physical differences that prevent transfer of gametes.
Gamete isolation
Reproductive isolation where gametes may be transferred but fertilisation won’t occur.
Hybrid inviability
Hybrid zygotes begin to develop but fail to develop normally or survive.
Population
A group of organisms of the same species living in the same area.
Community
The sum of all populations in an area.
Ecosystem
The interaction between a community and the abiotic factors in an area.
