1st Amendment

1st Amendment

• guarantees freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition.

• citizens have the right to practice any religion, speak freely, assemble, address the government, and publish press.

• Congress cannot make laws that promote or prohibit religion or deny the right to speech, press, petition, or assembly.

2nd Amendment

right to bear arms/weapons

3rd Amendment

prohibits quartering, or being forced to house a soldier w/o consent

4th Amendment

• protects citizens from unreasonable searches or seizures.

• police must obtain a warrant w/ probable cause to search or seize property

5th Amendment

• protects citizens from being held for committing a crime unless they are properly indicted

• cannot be tried twice for the same crime.

• have the right to remain silent

6th Amendment

• guarantees a speedy trial

• guarantees an impartial jury

• guarantees that the accused has a lawyer either appointed by themself or by the state.

7th Amendment

• guarantees a speedy civil trial

• guarantees a jury civil trial if the dispute is more than 20 dollars

8th Amendment

• prohibits cruel and unusual punishments

• prohibits excessive fines

9th Amendment

grants all rights not listed in the Bill of Rights and not forbidden in the Constitution to the people

10th Amendment

grants states the power to make laws in any subject area not covered by the Constitution (i.e. education)
