Organisms that produce their own food, typically through photosynthesis, and form the base of the food web.

Primary consumers

Herbivores that consume producers, such as grasshoppers which eat grass.

Decomposers

Organisms that break down dead material and recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.

Scientific Method

A systematic process that scientists follow to conduct experiments and investigations.

Hypothesis

An educated prediction about the outcome of an experiment.

Energy Transformation

The process of changing energy from one form to another, such as chemical energy to radiant energy in a flashlight.

Conservation of Energy

The principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed from one type to another.

Kinetic Energy

The energy of an object in motion, which is transformed from potential energy.

Potential Energy

Stored energy in an object due to its position or state, such as a ball held above the ground.

Food Web

A network of interconnected food chains in an ecosystem, showing the flow of energy among organisms.
