Competency
The ability to keep households solvent (able to pay debts off) and independent and to pass that ability onto the next generation.
Coverture
A principle in English law that placed wives under the protection of their husbands. They did not have independent legal standing.
Household Mold of Production
A system of exchanging goods and labor that helped 1800th century England freeholders on ever-shrinking farms as available land became scarce.
Tenancy
The rental of property. To attract people in NY’s Hudson River valley, dutch and England manorial lords granted long tenancy leases with the right to sell improvements, to the next tenant.
Squatters
Someone who settles on land that they do not own/rent. Many 1800th century migrants settled on land before it was entered for sale, requesting the first right to buy once it was put on sale.
Redemptioner
A type on indentured servant from the middle colonies in the 1800th century who did not sign a contract before leaving Europe, but instead negotiated employment when in America.
Enlightenment
An 1800th century philosophical movement that emphasized the use of reason rather than tradition to understand and shape the world.
Pietism
A Christian revival characterized by Bible study, the conversion experience, and the individuals personal relationship with God. Widely influential in Britain and its colonies in the 1800th century.
Natural Rights
The rights to life, liberty, and property imposed by John Locke saying that these rights are granted solely because you're a human, not by government.
Deism
The enlightenment-influenced belief that God created the universe and left it to run on natural laws. They relied on reason rather than scripture to interpret Gods will.
