Transformers
Electrical devices used to convert AC voltage from one level to another (high to low or low to high) using electromagnetic induction.
Primary Coil/Winding
The coil on the input side of a transformer.
Secondary Coil/Winding
The coil on the output side of a transformer.
Core (Transformer)
A ferromagnetic material that conducts a magnetic field, commonly made of iron.
Mutual Inductance
The principle where AC current in one coil induces AC voltage in a nearby coil.
Turns Ratio (TR)
The ratio of the number of turns in the primary coil to the number of turns in the secondary coil. (TR = Np/Ns)
Isolation Transformer
A transformer where the primary and secondary are physically isolated with no electrical connection.
Advantages of Isolation Transformer
Voltage spikes on the primary side are greatly reduced or eliminated in the secondary side. Loads connected to the secondary are protected from primary shorts.
Autotransformer
A transformer that uses one coil for both primary and secondary, using taps to produce different voltage ratios.
Control Transformer
A transformer used to reduce voltage from the main power line to a lower voltage for a machine's electrical control system.
