Operation Sense
A highly integrated understanding of the four basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and their many different but related meanings in real contexts.
Additive Situations
Problem structures that include both addition and subtraction, often categorized into join, separate, part-part-whole, and compare problems.
Multiplicative Situations
Problem structures that include both multiplication and division, often categorized into equal groups, multiplicative comparison, combinations, and product-of-measures problems.
Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK)
The deep understanding that teachers need to effectively organize and support students' mathematics learning, including awareness of varied problem structures.
Join Problems
Addition and subtraction problems involving an initial amount, a change amount (added/joined), and a resulting amount.
Separate Problems
Addition and subtraction problems where an amount is being removed from an initial whole or largest amount.
Part-Part-Whole Problems
Addition and subtraction problems involving two parts combined into one whole, which may be a physical or mental combination.
Compare Problems
Addition and subtraction problems that involve the comparison of two quantities, where the third amount is the difference between them.
Semantic Equation
An equation where the numbers are listed in the order that follows the meaning of the problem (e.g., [] + 4 = 12).
Computational Form of the Equation
An equivalent equation that isolates the unknown quantity on one side of the equal sign (e.g., 12 - 4 = [] from [] + 4 = 12).
Equal Sign
A symbol meaning 'is the same as' or representing balance between two sides of an equation, rather than just indicating 'the answer is coming up.'
Context Problems
Mathematical problems connected closely to children's lives, designed to anticipate and develop their mathematical modeling of the real world.
Subtraction as Think-Addition
A strategy for solving subtraction facts by thinking 'what goes with the part I see to make the whole?' (e.g., for 9-6, think '6 and what makes 9?').
Commutative Property for Addition
The property stating that the order in which two numbers are added does not change the sum (e.g., 3 + 5 = 5 + 3).
Associative Property for Addition
The property stating that when adding three or more numbers, the way the numbers are grouped does not affect the sum.
Zero Property (for Addition and Subtraction)
Zero acts as an identity element in addition (a + 0 = a) and subtraction (a - 0 = a), meaning adding or subtracting zero typically does not change the number.
Equal Groups Problems
Multiplicative situations where one number counts how many sets or groups of equal size are involved, and the other factor tells the size of each set.
Multiplicative Comparison Problems
Multiplicative situations where one set consists of multiple copies of another set, focusing on how many times greater one quantity is than another.
Partition Division (Fair-Sharing)
A division situation where the whole is shared or distributed among a known number of sets to determine the size of each set (e.g., 24 apples shared among 4 friends).
Measurement Division (Repeated-Subtraction)
A division situation where the whole is 'measured off' in sets of a given size to determine how many sets can be made (e.g., 24 apples put into bags of 6 each).
Combinations Problems (Cartesian Products)
Multiplicative problems that involve counting the number of possible pairings or arrangements that can be made between elements of two or more sets.
Area and Other Product-of-Measures Problems
Multiplicative problems where the product is a different type of unit from the two factors, such as two lengths resulting in an area (e.g., length x width = area in square units).
Array
An arrangement of things in rows and columns, such as a rectangle of square tiles or blocks, widely used as a model for multiplication and division.
Commutative Property of Multiplication
The property stating that the order of the factors in a multiplication problem does not change the product (e.g., 3 x 8 = 8 x 3).
Associative Property of Multiplication
The property stating that when multiplying three or more numbers, the way the numbers are grouped does not affect the product.
Zero and Identity Properties (Multiplication)
Properties related to multiplying by zero (any number times zero is zero) and by one (any number times one is itself).
Distributive Property
The property stating that one of two factors in a product can be split into two or more parts, and each part multiplied separately and then added to get the same result as the original product (e.g., 6 x 9 = (6 x 5) + (6 x 4)).
Think About the Answer Before Solving Strategy
A problem-solving strategy that focuses students on understanding the problem's context and the nature of the expected answer, rather than rushing into calculations.
Work a Simpler Problem Strategy
A problem-solving strategy where students substitute small whole numbers for relevant large numbers, model the simplified problem, write an equation, and then apply the same logic to the original numbers.
Key Word Strategy
A problem-solving approach to be avoided, where students are taught to find specific words in a problem to determine the operation, which can often be misleading or absent and discourages sense-making.
Hidden Question
An intermediate question within a two-step problem that must be answered before the final solution can be found.
