What are ions?
Ions are formed when atoms lose or gain electrons to obtain a stable electron arrangement
How are positive ions formed?
Positive ions are formed when metal atoms lose electrons
How are negative ions formed?
Negative ions are formed when non-metal atoms gain electrons
What is an ionic bond?
An ionic bond is the electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points because strong ionic bonds must be broken to break up the lattice
What structure do ionic compounds form?
Ionic compounds form lattice structures of oppositely charged ions
When do ionic compounds conduct electricity?
Ionic compounds conduct electricity only when molten or in solution because the lattice structure breaks up allowing ions to be free to move
What are group ions?
Group ions contain more than one type of atom and are treated as a single particle with a charge
Why are noble gases so stable?
Noble gases are stable because they have complete outer electron shells
