Prayer (Catechism Definition)

The raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from Him.

Vocal Prayer

A form of prayer using words to express thoughts and feelings to God.

Meditation

Reflecting on God’s word or mysteries of faith.

Contemplation

Silent, loving awareness of God’s presence.

Adoration

The first part of the ACTS method involving praising God for who He is—His greatness, goodness, and love—focusing on worship and reverence.

Contrition

The second part of the ACTS method involving expressing sorrow for sins and asking for forgiveness to encourage humility and repentance.

Thanksgiving

The third part of the ACTS method involving showing gratitude for God’s blessings and mercy.

Supplication

The final part of the ACTS method involving asking God for help, guidance, and needs through petitions and intercessions.

Latria

The highest form of worship and adoration, given only to God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Hyperdulia

The special veneration given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, recognizing her unique role as the Mother of God and model of faith.

Protodulia

The special honor given to St. Joseph as the foster father of Jesus and protector of the Holy Family.

Dulia

The veneration given to all saints to honor their holiness and example of Christian living.

Thumb (Five Finger Prayer)

The finger closest to the heart, used to remind believers to pray for family and close friends.

Index Finger (Five Finger Prayer)

The pointer finger, used to pray for teachers, doctors, and spiritual leaders who guide others.

Middle Finger (Five Finger Prayer)

The tallest finger, used to pray for those in authority, including government, community, and Church leaders.

Ring Finger (Five Finger Prayer)

The weakest finger, used to pray for the weak, sick, and those in need.

Little Finger (Five Finger Prayer)

The smallest finger, used to pray for oneself while remembering humility before God.

The Our Father

Also known as The Lord’s Prayer, it was taught by Jesus to His disciples in Matthew 6:9–13 as a perfect model of prayer.

The Hail Mary

A prayer that combines words from Scripture (Luke 1:28 and Luke 1:42) with the Church’s petition to honor Mary and ask for her intercession.
