Aerobic exercise
A system of conditioning involving activities that raise respiratory and heart rate, use oxygen to meet energy demands, and improve cardiorespiratory endurance; strengthens the heart and lungs.
Cardiorespiratory endurance
The ability of the heart, lungs, and circulatory system to supply oxygen to working muscles during sustained activity.
Moderate-Intensity Aerobics
Aerobic activities performed at a moderate level of effort; examples include sweeping, moving furniture, pushing a vacuum cleaner.
Vigorous-Intensity Aerobics
Aerobic activities performed at a high level of effort; increases heart rate and breathing; examples include flag football, distance running, soccer, basketball, tennis, and vigorous dancing.
Active games
Vigorous activities that involve running and chasing (e.g., flag football, distance running, jumping rope).
Anaerobic exercise
Short-duration, high-intensity exercises performed quickly against resistance to increase muscular strength and endurance.
Muscular strength
The amount of force a muscle can exert; developed by anaerobic exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups, and weight lifting.
Muscular endurance
The ability of muscles to sustain repeated contractions or continue to exert force over time.
Push-ups
An anaerobic exercise that builds upper-body muscular strength.
Pull-ups
An anaerobic exercise that strengthens the upper body by lifting body weight.
Weight lifting
A form of anaerobic exercise using weights to build muscle strength.
Sprinting
A short, high-speed run used to develop muscular strength and power.
Lean body mass
The portion of body mass that is not fat; maintaining lean mass is important for weight management.
Osteoporosis
A condition characterized by weakened bones with an increased risk of fractures; anaerobic exercise can help minimize this risk.
HDL-cholesterol
High-density lipoprotein cholesterol; the 'good' cholesterol; exercise can increase it.
Flexibility
The ability of muscles and joints to move through a full range of motion.
Range of motion
The extent to which a joint can move in its available directions.
Stretching
Activities that lengthen muscles and improve flexibility.
Toe touching
A stretching exercise targeting the hamstrings and lower back.
Sit and reach
A flexibility exercise or test measuring how far you can reach forward.
Yoga
A practice that combines stretching, balance, and breathing to improve flexibility and body control.
Rhythmic activities
Physical activities with rhythm (e.g., dance) that help develop flexibility.
Gymnastics
A sport involving movements that improve flexibility and overall body control.
Martial Arts
Disciplines such as Arnis, Taekwondo, and karate-do; vigorous activities that improve strength, flexibility, and coordination.
Arnis
A Filipino martial art mentioned in the notes as an example of martial arts.
Taekwondo
A Korean martial art mentioned in the notes.
Karate-do
A Japanese martial art mentioned in the notes.
