Acidic
A substance or solution that has a pH level below 7 and releases hydrogen ions.
Alkaline / Basic
A chemical substance with a pH level greater than 7 on a scale up to 14.
Dissolved oxygen (DO)
The amount of free, non-compound oxygen gas (O2) present in water.
Evaporation
The change in state from liquid to gas below the boiling point
of the substance.
Halocline
The rapid change of salinity with depth.
Hypersaline
Body of water has a salinity level greater than 40 ‰ .
pH (Potential of hydrogen)
A scale used in science to measure how acidic or basic a water-based liquid is
Phytoplankton
Microscopic, plant-like organisms that drift in water and use sunlight to make food through photosynthesis.
Precipitation
Any liquid or solid water that forms in the atmosphere and falls to Earth, or a solid that separates out from a liquid solution during a chemical reaction.
Runoff
The flow of water from land caused by precipitation.
Salinity
The measure of the amount of dissolved salts in water or soil.
Solubility
The ability of a solute to dissolve within a solvent such as water.
Thermocline
A distinct transition layer in a large body of water where water temperature drops rapidly with increasing depth, separating warmer surface water from cold deep water.
