What was the condition of ireland ?

majority of people were catholic

during the 18th century ireland was dominated by protestant ascendancy who became landowners, majistrates, lawyers and MPs

from late 18th century irish tenant farmers and peasants had been growing dependant on potatoes for food as the population had grown from 4m to 8m 1801-1845

ireland was very rural and less than 30% could read or write

had been chief secretary for ireland 1812-18 nickname orange peel as he was a supporter of the protestant domination

had been against catholic emancipation but gave it in 1829

gave irish concessions to try and pacify them

banned oconnell from speaking at a great meeting 1843 at clontart - he was arrested

non denominational unis at cork, galway and belfast however these were never established as the pope objected

1845, proposed inc grant given to catholic training colleges and make priests more educated

raised from £9000 to £26,000 and a further £30,000 for buildings

reactions - william gladstone who was president of board of trade and many in the tory party hated the idea and some believed it to be undermining the c of e

150 conservatives voted against it and 10,000 petitions made signed by 1.2m

passed with whig support

1845, a report on irish land problems

said that when irish tenants were evicted they were not given compensation

peel wanted to create a prosperous mc peasantry who would produce more crops in an efficient way

it was heavily critised by landowners in the HOC for being too costly and interfering
